Vase

By Emily Hizny

Copper sunsets

and skies of iridescent aqua

paint the air before her eyes

as she holds the crystalline curvatures together:

tiny broken pieces of a spherical world

now scattered shards of brilliant rainbow.

The cloudless ocean sky disappears when she loosens her grip,

allowing the pieces to return lifeless in her palms

as she observes the carnage below.

Uneven sections lay scattered,

lily pinks turning ice whites

and candy yellows turning mountain greens

as they shimmer and stare

at the accidental bringer of chaos.

She presses the pieces again,

her tears disappearing

into the sky ocean

laid endlessly to the near

and far off horizon,

the sweet penny of sun

bathing her in metallic light.

Kneeling down,

image still fresh and vibrant,

she plucks an inky broken star

and links it to the aqua.

Crows rush past her ears

cawing and soaring to the sky,

dancing in companion circles around the sun

distant yet welcoming company.

Sitting down on

the newly hallowed ground,

she plucks and perfects:

trees of vines and lights,

fruits of honey anger

and bitter happiness,

regrowing

and reliving

anew.
