Nostalgia for the Future

By Ellie Cameron

I long for a time I’ve never known,

For a foreign house that feels like home,

For a solitude that’s not alone,

And an open earth I’m free to roam.

I long for a novel I’ve never read,

For a world of words that haven’t been said,

For a place that exists not even in my head,

And a fantasy Elysium in the land of the dead.

My heart belongs to a lover I’ve never met,

An idealized version of canvas silhouette,

Whose company is a familiar homestead,

And whose soul has colors like a winter sunset.

I’m chasing a feeling I have never felt,

A warmth that can make the icy sorrow melt,

A peace I know I haven't yet paralleled,

An acceptance my body has never held.
